Background:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violinist_of_Hameln
It's a bit hard to describe all of Violinist of Hameln, and it's 37 volumes. So I'm only going to focus on Lutes history and the History of Sforzando. I'll also note that Lute, though he has three or so volumes dedicated to him, is a secondary character that does not interact with the main cast in the present more than once. His story for the most part takes place fifteen years before the start of the manga. He more or less only has the time span of a fight and a couple minutes after to relate with them before permanently dying.
Sforzando is and was a country that was built up on magic, it had the best mages of the world, and due to this was the most protected. They were one of the few countries capable of fending off the Mazoku and keeping their borders safe for mankind. Back when the Mazoku were first released Lute was one of the main reasons this was possible.
The Sforzando Royal Family are the most powerful individuals when magic is concerned. The Queen, Queen Horn is near immortal with the ability to heal, the King was an incredibly powerful mage, the most powerful in the country until Lute was born at least. Lute is the first and only prince of Sforzando, first and elder child to Queen Horn and her Husband (who has no name, and it's actually a gag in the manga no one can remember it.) He was considered the most powerful human in the world, and was not simply the prince but also the captain of the royal magic guard as well as the high priest of Sforzando. (They practice some kind of Crystal Jesus type religion.)
When Flute, Lutes little sister turned one, Sforzando was attacked by a Mazoku army headed by one of the four great captains Bass. Bass wrecked the city, and despite Lute, and the entire army's best efforts nearly wins. At a turning point Lute had a chance to kill him, but Bass managed to kidnap baby Flute and use her against him. Due to this he is stabbed several times, drained of blood which the Mazoku use to give themselves a magic boost and has his soul ripped out of him. Yet still, despite this he manages to save Flute in his last moments.
Still, despite Lutes final condition, Bass is left with only a head, however Bass does take Lutes body and uses it as a puppet, freely acting the role of a parasite and using Lutes great skills for his own gain. This continues for fifteen years.
There isn't much to say about Lute during these fifteen years. What can be said though is that he was aware of them, which should have been impossible with his soul separated from his body. He displays a few times the ability to take control of his body under extreme conditions, though only slightly. (He manages to use a spell to save a close friend Clari, a child he raised and taught before dying, as well as stop spells Bass uses and is seen crying tears of blood at Bass' atrocities.)
However near the end of the manga there is a great effort made to save Lute, which Clari, Lutes former student, and all the other children he taught and raised team up to fight Bass with the goal of freeing Lutes soul. Clari manages to succeed but it costs him both his arms and both his legs in the process. Bass has also captured a teenage Flute and strung her up, ready to use her body the same way he used Lutes. (As she is also very powerful and rich in magic. Lutes magic is running out due to how Bass is using him.) When Lute regains his soul he sets Bass' head on fire, and then with the little bit left of life energy he has he sacrifices himself body and all to healing Clari's limbs, as well as the wounds Flute has endured. He has enough time to say goodbye before fading away.
Personality:
Lute is very sweet and has been described as innocent and naive. He is very strong in his will and desperately protects the people he loves, mostly his sister and mother. (There’s a gag about how his father is so unimportant no one can even remember his name.) He has a tendency to keep his personal issues to himself (such as when he is hurt, or worried about something) this is so no one will have to worry about him. He’s the sort of person that will take on the weight of the world just so no one else has to shoulder the responsibility. And though he isn’t the sort to ever lie, he will avoid the truth (or lie about his own personal condition) so everyone can believe in things being alright. The idea is that even if they’re not truly alright right now, Lute will go out and make it so soon enough.
When he is defending those he loves he can become something akin to a demon. His tactics are quick and calculating and delivered without hesitance. He will risk every part of himself in order to win and protect those around him, as their lives are always worth more than his own. He can be reckless when fighting and the definition of a martyr.
But, the series is still a gag manga and for every moment he’s a capable, intelligent, and powerful character he's also a ditzy klutz especially so when it comes to using powerful magic during inappropriate times. He has accidentally harmed his advisers before due to this and his little sister Flute. Usually this is only a problem when he becomes enthusiastic. These situations are also always played for laughs. They’re generally absurd like throwing his baby sister Flute up into the air, but doing it with too much force so she hits the ceiling, then he panics and misses catching her and she lands on the floor.
In general Lute is an optimistic, bright and generous person with a big heart who just wants everyone around him to be safe and happy. If he has to sacrifice his own life to do it, he will. In fact he did it twice. Once when he saved Flute as a baby, and again as his farewell to heal Clari and Flute during the final battle.
It is important to note that Lute spent fifteen years without a soul, but his will is so strong that there are times his body manages to move and act on his own. Though he is a puppet to Bass, there are several moments where spells are cast to aid Hamel and company, or at least to stop things Bass is doing against them. During several tragic moments (mostly caused by Bass) Lute’s body will even cry tears of blood.
It’s said that a body can’t do anything without it’s soul, so it’s quite amazing that Lute’s could do anything during that period of time, and just shows how determined he can be.
In the end when Lute does get his soul back he doesn’t panic, he’s not confused, he stays calm and does what needs to be done, even if it makes his reunion a little sad. Though he is incredibly happy he gets a chance to see Flute again as well as Clari. As a martyr Lute peacefully crumbles to dust sacrificing himself to his friends and family, a smile on his face. This was the person he always was, the person who loves others more than anything else.
Abilities:
There's a long list....
Lute is considered the strongest human mage the world has ever seen. There is little he can't do. In fact he is shown as being able to learn new kinds of magic, some lost for centuries rather effortlessly. There is only one thing he can't do, and that is healing magic. Healing magic is a skill that belongs only to the females of the Sforzando Royal Family.
The things he can do are some of the following, though not limited to these; fly, teleport, create bird shikigami, create barriers, create seals, expel great amounts of magical energy, transmutation and illusion magic, control at least the four elements (water, fire, earth, air), enhanced strength, enhanced speed, the ability to move his body even when his soul has been removed, sense evil, sense demons through complicated enchanted disguises, live through things that would kill anyone else (being stabbed through like 40 times, though this is common in this manga.), learn any magic given the chance (but healing), and is considered a genius, especially when it comes to magic.
Really if one can think of it and it is magical he can do it and is probably proficient at it. What he doesn't know he can learn and is described as closer to a demon than human in his magical ability. He is even shown learning and casting complex magic simply while reading the spell out of a book.
Alignment: Daimonia
Lute more than anything is joyful, and tries to bring joy to others. He’s happy, upbeat and incredibly positive.
Other:
Though at the end Lute disintegrated to dust I’m going to assume his body was restored to it’s prime.
